Barcelona president names 13 clubs ready to join the European Super League right now

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has named 13 teams that would be interested in playing in the controversial European Super League. In an interview with RAC1 (h/t Mundo Deportivo), he also talked about why teams like Paris Saint-Germain are not interested in this league.

Laporto’s discussion contained various ongoing concerns within Barça, with particular emphasis on Xavi’s impending departure at the end of the season.

However, amidst the comprehensive coverage, considerable attention was dedicated to a prominent issue in the football landscape—the Super League.

When asked about the team interested in this competition, the Barcelona president said,

“Inter, AC Milan, Napoli, AS Roma, any team in La Liga except Atletico de Madrid, which has another position, Marseille, the three Portuguese sides Benfica, Sporting and Porto, the three Dutch teams Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV and two Belgians, Anderlecht and Bruges.”

Meanwhile, in reference to alternative teams like PSG, the president expressed disinterest, citing their relationship with the UEFA. 

Regarding English teams, a definite stance was taken, noting that they already possess their exclusive Super League. On the other hand, exploring the potential expansion of participating teams, he acknowledged that everything is in the initial phase right now, with the possibility of incorporating others in subsequent stages.

Super League is gaining strength

A22 Sports Management, established to support the creation of the European Super League, recently released a letter addressed to UEFA, urging an immediate break to what they see as anticompetitive actions.

The decision to share the letter was prompted by A22’s claim that UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin had “publicly discussed and mischaracterized” a previous communication wherein A22 demanded UEFA’s compliance with EU regulations and court rulings to stop obstructing their activities.

Despite a December ruling by the European Court of Justice, which found UEFA and FIFA in violation of EU law for impeding the formation of a Super League, A22 alleges that UEFA has persisted in engaging in anticompetitive behaviour.

“We hereby demand that UEFA and its executives, with immediate effect, a) cease and desist from any form of anticompetitive action against A22, its business initiatives, its partners and directors,” the letter said.
