A detailed look at Barcelona’s defensive lapse in numbers

Barcelona’s recent 2-4 loss to Girona marked the third time in their last four games that they conceded three or more goals.

In these matches, the team managed a 4-2 win against Valencia but suffered a 2-3 loss to Real Madrid shortly after their disappointing exit from the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals with a 1-4 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

In these four matches, Xavi’s squad has allowed 13 goals while scoring just nine, a concerning trend for the team.

These stats highlight the defensive vulnerabilities Barcelona are currently facing and the situation is even more challenging given the club’s limited financial resources, making it harder for them to address these issues effectively in the upcoming season.

Barcelona’s defensive lapse in numbers

Girona’s recent performance, scoring four goals against Barcelona, is not unique for Barcelona this season.

Earlier in the Spanish Super Cup, Real Madrid secured a 4-1 victory, while Athletic Club achieved a 4-2 win in the Copa del Rey.

Similarly, PSG notched up a 4-1 victory in the Champions League, and at Montjuïc, Villarreal scored five goals in a 5-3 win.

Furthermore, Real Madrid have faced off against Barcelona three times this season and scored nine goals, while Girona and Villarreal have each netted eight goals in two games.

A record to forget

Barcelona’s defence has struggled, conceding a total of 68 goals across four competitions so far: 43 in La Liga, 14 in the Champions League, seven in the Copa del Rey, and four in the Spanish Super Cup.

This is the fourth-worst defensive record of the 21st century. Not since the 2012-2013 season, when Barcelona allowed 70 goals in 60 games, has the team performed so poorly defensively.

The team’s current record stands at 43 goals conceded with four games remaining in the league.

To put things in perspective, Barcelona’s 43 goals conceded in La Liga have placed the team in a tough spot.

They rank ninth for the most goals allowed, tied with Las Palmas. Notably, Rayo, currently in 15th place, have let in 40 goals, while Mallorca, sitting in 16th, have conceded 42.
