Atletico Madrid loanee having ‘his best season’ at Barcelona


Coming on in the 56th minute against Las Palmas, Joao Felix made a match-winning cameo for Barcelona at the weekend.

The Portuguese phenom found a sensational ball over the top to find Raphinha for the team’s winning goal while also hitting the woodwork once and missing one big chance to double the team’s lead.

It was not the first time that the 24-year-old winger showed his brilliance in a Blaugrana shirt. The only drawback to his profile, however, continues to be the irregularity in his form.

Personal best

Despite his ups and downs under Xavi and constantly shuffling role between a starter and an impact substitute, Felix has beaten his personal best in terms of goal contributions this campaign.

His best-ever season so far came with Atletico Madrid in 2020-21 when he participated in 16 goals. His assist against Las Palmas took his tally for Barcelona to 17, thus bettering his previous best.

Across all competitions this season, he has already scored nine goals and provided eight assists. With the business of the season yet to arrive, his campaign could go to greater heights.

Of all his contributions, his match-winning goals against Athletic Club, Porto, Atletico Madrid and Real Betis stand out as some of the numerous occasions the player came up clutch for Xavi’s side.

What does the future hold?

While Felix may not have done enough yet to warrant an immediate permanent transfer, Joan Laporta and Barcelona have been impressed by his flashes of brilliance and believe they can unearth the real talent within.

Barça Universal understand that the Portuguese superstar will not return to Atletico Madrid as long as Diego Simeone is the manager.

His agent, Jorge Mendes, is working hard to ensure that Barcelona and Atleti reach an agreement, but the two parties currently do not see eye-to-eye.

The Catalans hope to extend Felix’s loan for a further season with a purchase clause attached at a nominal valuation. Los Rojiblancos, however, continue to push for an immediate sale.
