Barça’s appearance at 1,500 kids’ tournament canceled last minute

The Ibercup Elite 2024 youth football tournament, which was set to feature 1,500 players from a hundred club quarries worldwide, including FC Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid, Juventus, Chelsea, and América from Mexico, has been canceled as announced this Saturday.

In a statement sent to the clubs, the tournament’s organizers, based in San Roque (Cádiz), cited “internal problems within local institutions” as the reason for the suspension.

The competition was scheduled to take place at the Santa María Polo Club in the San Roque urbanization of Sotogrande, affecting one thousand five hundred young players aged 9 to 16 from some of the most prestigious quarries and academies of international clubs.

Several participants have expressed their frustration on social media regarding the expenses incurred for travel and accommodation arrangements made for an event that was supposed to kick off this Saturday and conclude on Tuesday.

A total of one hundred teams from Australia, Brazil, South Korea, Denmark, Dubai, Spain, Italy, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and Romania had registered for the tournament. The lineup included clubs like Roma, Everton, Benfica, Sporting, Porto, Sevilla, Granada, and Cádiz.

This would have been Andalusia’s first time hosting this elite sporting event, following its hosting of one of the primary tournaments in the Ibercup international competition last July.
