Barcelona, Atletico Madrid to battle for €40 million-rated Manchester United forward

It’s been weeks since Barcelona’s links with controversial Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood first emerged and following up on that, Mundo Deportivo has reported that Atletico Madrid have entered the race as well.

The 22-year-old English forward appears to be moving away from his current club, Manchester United, despite being on loan with Getafe.

Now, it is to be noted that the reason why he moved to Spain is because of an incident related to gender violence, resulting in a three-day prison stay, although the case did not proceed to trial.

Since Manchester United are not keen on reclaiming his services, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are reportedly showing interest in acquiring Greenwood, who the Red Devils are rating at approximately €40 million.

How can Barcelona afford Greenwood?

The Dutch international, who was wanted by Man United last summer, has a contract with Barcelona until 2026 and given the current state of finances, a tempting offer will once again force the Blaugrana to at least consider the bidding.

It is believed that Manchester United are intensifying efforts to secure the Dutchman and for that, they are reportedly considering a strategic move by offering Greenwood as part of the deal to reduce the overall transfer cost from Barcelona.

While it is something that seems a bit sketchy, Barcelona would not mind signing a talent like Greenwood in the first place as he has exhibited outstanding performance during his 24 appearances for Getafe this season, contributing with seven goals and five assists.

Thanks to his display, the 22-year-old has become a revelation in the Spanish league, attracting interest not only from clubs in Spain but also from top teams across Europe and if Barcelona are indeed serious, they might have to act fast.
