Barcelona coaches and technical staff in disagreement over January midfield targets – report

Following the season-ending injury to Gavi and Pedri’s continued fitness problems, FC Barcelona have made it a point to sign a new midfielder in the ongoing January transfer window.

Despite the financial complications that continue to plague the club, Barcelona are confident that they will have the funds needed to boost their salary limit and sign a new midfielder before the transfer window closes.

While work is being done towards raising the necessary funds, the recruitment department is assessing all possible options to strengthen the midfield unit.

Coaches and technical staff split between Garcia and Onana

Amidst this, AS is reporting that Barcelona’s coaches and the technical staff are not in agreement on the ideal transfer target to bolster the midfield this month.

As per the update, the coaching staff is leaning towards a move for Girona midfield star Aleix Garcia.

The 26-year-old is seen as a good fit in the scheme of things and his ability to operate as a pivot or an interior makes him a popular option.

However, the club’s technical department is in favour of signing Amadou Onana of Everton. The Belgian is four years younger than Garcia and brings in more power and physicality to the midfield department.

Both deals difficult

While there may still be no consensus over who to sign, Barcelona will have major difficulties in acquiring either Aleix Garcia or Amadou Onana.

As reported earlier today, Garcia’s release clause stands at €20 million and Girona will not accept a lower sum for their ace midfielder. Barça, though, are not in a position to pay that fee.

Meanwhile, Onana is tied down to a long-term contract at Everton until 2027 and would command a fee of around €50 million or more, making it nearly impossible for the Blaugrana to secure his signing.
