Barcelona confident of securing funds for a new midfield signing in January – report

Ferran Torres, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Adama Traore are just some of the heroes who arrived in the winter transfer market for Barcelona in recent years and turned the season around.

As mid-season reinforcements, they were perfectly tailored for the situation the Catalans were in and delivered the needed firepower on all fronts.

This time around, however, Barcelona cannot hope for much luck in that respect. Crippled by their own economic situation, the Blaugranas are pressed for breathing space and do not have any tangible space for a new signing.

Optimism still prevails

As revealed by Spanish journalist Adria Albets via Cadena SER, Barcelona refuse to give up hope. They are confident that the required money will arrive and that a midfield reinforcement will be signed in January.

Xavi Hernandez has openly called out Barcelona’s need for a new midfielder after Gavi’s ACL tear, for he has been strapped for resources in the middle of the park.

“We have to make people see that at the moment we can’t bring in anyone else, it’s a reality. From here we will see. I insist, with Gavi’s injury, a reinforcement in midfield would be very good,” he said in his pre-match press conference before the game against UD Barbastro.

The team’s preference is a player who can operate in the defensive midfield after Oriol Romeu’s dip in form, and Aleix Garcia is one top option being considered. However, the big question that remains is how the Catalans will get the required financial injection.

The one free option

If Barcelona do not receive any financial support from an investor as expected or make any big sales, the doors for a new signing would practically shut.

However, a certain Jesse Lingard still promises to be a viable candidate, albeit not a midfielder.

The former Manchester United star is currently a free agent and has offered his services to the Catalans. The administration see him to be a useful option coming in for free, and his registration would thus not create any problems on the FFP front.

It remains to be seen if Joan Laporta & co. pursue the Englishman’s services or opt to pass on it. However, there are not many arguments one can make against the transfer considering Barcelona’s dire situation.
