Barcelona considering selling defensive stalwart for €100 million to solve financial problems

Barcelona emerged out of the January transfer market with only one new signing – Vitor Roque, the Brazilian who has shown signs of promise in his early days at the club.

But the Catalans are bracing themselves for a far busier summer transfer window, where they will likely to have negotiate the exits of several key players.

Ronald Araujo is among the stars in contention to leave Barça at the end of the season, especially with Bayern Munich keeping close tabs on his services.

Barcelona’s Araujo dilemma

A recent report from Diario SPORT does note that Barcelona have a decision to make in the summer, in regard to the future of Ronald Araujo.

The report confirms that Bayern Munich retain interest in the player and are most certainly expected to come back for him in the market, after missing out in the January window.

Araujo’s valuation could reach up to €100 million, with several clubs interested in his services. Other than Bayern, Manchester United have expressed the desire to sign the defender.

This has left Barcelona with a decision to make. The club are internally discussing whether or not to sell the player in the coming summer, knowing the revenue generated from the sale could go a long way in helping the club.

Barcelona, after all, continue to suffer from economic turmoil and require the sale of at least a few players to be able to go after new ones.

Araujo looks to be a tempting option because of his high valuation. But should Barça sanction the sale of the Uruguayan international, they will lose out on one of the key defensive leaders in the team.

Given the way Barcelona have struggled with finding the right defenders over the past six years, Araujo’s sale could indeed be a risk.

Deco, though, does have other plans for raising capital, including the sale of unwanted stars. But whether or not Barça can generate enough suitors for these players, remains to be seen.
