Barcelona face Newcastle United battle in pursuit of 17-year-old midfield wonderkid – report

Lucas Bergvall is one of the most exciting young midfield talents in Europe and is attracting serious interest from top clubs, including FC Barcelona.

Just 17 years old, the midfielder has become a regular for Swedish outfit Djurgardens IF, racking up 29 senior appearances in which he has three goals and an assist.

A versatile operator who can play as a pivot or as an interior midfielder, Bergvall has impressed Barcelona, but competition for his signing seems to be growing.

Newcastle United join Barcelona in Bergvall pursuit

Indeed, as per reports relayed by Shields Gazette, Newcastle United have joined Barcelona in the race to sign Lucas Bergvall from Djurgardens.

The Premier League club have been very active in the transfer market ever since their takeover a couple of years ago and are now eyeing a move for Bergvall, regarded as one of the most promising young midfielders in Europe.

Apart from Newcastle, other clubs like Inter Milan and Eintracht Frankfurt are also looking at the teenage prospect.

But the report states that it is Barcelona who appear to be ahead of the chasing pack in pursuit of Bergvall.

Offers made

Indeed, it was previously reported that Barcelona have already tabled an initial €4 million offer for Bergvall, but it was always likely to get knocked back by Djurgardens.

Djurgardens’ sporting director, Bo Andersson, had confirmed last month that talks had opened with Barcelona over a transfer, saying:

“Yes, I can confirm that we have been in contact and in dialogue with Barcelona. But it’s not a negotiation yet. There was some contact with Barcelona last week but this week we haven’t spoken to them.”

More recently, it was claimed that the Blaugrana had improved their offer to €6.5 million, although there is no clarity over whether that would be accepted by the Swedish club.

With Newcastle entering the picture, Djurgardens might decide to hold out for a higher fee for Bergvall, which could complicate matters for Barcelona.

However, it is claimed that the 17-year-old wants to join Barça as a priority while the club themselves are preparing to table an improved proposal. So, things could work out as intended for the La Liga champions.
