Barcelona superstar urges team to ‘take a step forward’ after 3-0 win over Atletico Madrid

Barcelona cruised to a crucial 3-0 win over Atletico Madrid at the Civitas Metropolitano on Sunday night, riding on the brilliance of Robert Lewandowski.

The Poland captain scored a goal and assisted the other two on the night, to lead the team to a resounding win and carry them to the second place in the La Liga table.

With Girona having dropped points on Saturday, it was important for Barcelona to make their chance count, which they did.

And, speaking after the game, Lewandowski called on his teammates to ‘take a step forward’ and build on their recent run of form.

“In the last few weeks, we’ve changed the training a bit, with a bit more intensity. I feel very good and I think my teammates do too. We have to continue like this after the break. It’s time to take a step forward,” he said.

Manager Xavi Hernandez praised Lewandowski after the game, claiming that it was one of the striker’s best performances for Barcelona. On whether he felt the same, the veteran said:

“It could be (that it was one of his best games for Barça), we played very well. We had the game under control, and we scored three goals on this pitch, which is very difficult.”

Discussing his relationship with the younger players in the squad, Lewandowski jokingly said:

“I know I have to help and support the young players, but I also need them to help me by passing me the ball or sending crosses.”

With a huge tie against PSG coming up in the Champions League quarterfinals next week, Lewandowski insisted that Barcelona need to keep doing what they are currently as they have the quality to beat anyone.

“The most important thing is to keep playing like we did today. We know how we can play, we have great potential with great players. A great squad combining young players with older players,” he said.
