Barcelona taking steps to secure the services of 29-year-old Man City star before Euros

As Barcelona enters the final stages of the campaign, the Catalan giants can begin evaluating the future of certain players.

Having signed him on loan, Joao Cancelo will be free to leave this summer, but owing to the full-back’s prominent performances this season, Barça are unwilling to part ways.

It was recently reported that Cancelo was garnering a great deal of interest from the likes of Arsenal and Saudi Arabian teams.

However, the Portuguese has always insisted on staying in Barcelona, and it appears his desire to continue will help facilitate a permanent deal.

Cancelo only wants Barcelona

Indeed, as per SPORT Cancelo’s commitment to staying at Barcelona is proving to be crucial in resuming the operation, which was far from simple given Manchester City’s uncompromising position previously.

Despite Manchester City receiving offers of €40 million, Jorge Mendes’ involvement and Cancelo’s will has turned the tide in Barcelona’s favour.

In February, Barcelona officially expressed their desire to secure him as a long-term strategic asset, prompting Cancelo to approve an extended contract that stretches beyond 2027.

When could the operation be closed?

This summer, an outright transfer or a loan with a buy option are the options under consideration.

Barcelona prefers a transfer agreement that includes a mandatory buyout option and a fixed fee with variables.

While efforts are now being made to address Barça’s salary cap issues, all signs point to a possible closure of the operation prior to the Euros, which will commence in June.
