Barcelona veteran leaning towards the MLS if he leaves in the summer – report

According to a report from Mundo Deportivo, veteran Barcelona defender Sergi Roberto has been thinking of joining a Major League Soccer side for a long time now and there are chances that he might leave at the end of the season.

Roberto, 32, has spent his entire career at Barcelona. Last summer, as the Blaugrana began exploring avenues to cut down their salary bill, he came close to leaving. 

As it turned out, though, Xavi requested the defender’s renewal but given that his contract expires in the summer, rumours about his future have resurfaced. 

As such, the aforementioned outlet has mentioned that while he had an option to move to Saudi Arabia, he is only thinking of moving to the United States.

Roberto is currently considering a shift from his longstanding relationship with Barcelona, and the prospect of relocating to a new league appears more likely than a contract renewal with the Catalan club.

This is mostly because the uncertainty surrounding his future persists even after Xavi expressed support for his renewal, but the club has not yet initiated any formal steps in that direction. 

The possibility of extending his stay for another year remains open, attributed to his influential role as captain, and his comparatively modest salary, but ultimately, the decision hinges on the yet-to-be-appointed coach for Barça.

Why MLS?

Interestingly, the prospect of relocating to the West holds particular charm for Roberto, primarily fueled by the fact that his wife is a distinguished American model. 

While the details of his continuity at Barcelona develop, the 32-year-old appears open to welcoming a fresh challenge in the form of Major League Soccer in the United States where several former Barcelona are currently active. 

This potential move has been on his mind for a long time which explains his eagerness to explore new opportunities.
