Barcelona will have to shell out €70 million to sign Bayern Munich midfield target

Barcelona want the summer transfer window of 2024 to be the last installment of their project rebuild that has been going on for a few years now.

The primary goal will be to sign a pivot, if they can arrange the funds to do so. The position has been a problem all through the season, with Oriol Romeu, Ilkay Gundogan, Andreas Christensen, Frenkie de Jong, and others filling in with varying success.

As such, Barcelona already have a shortlist ready for options, with Everton’s Amadou Onana on top of it.

Sporting director Deco rates the Belgian midfielder very highly and wants the club to push for his signature this summer to take over Sergio Busquets’ throne in the long-term.

However, Barcelona face a massive obstacle en route to his signing.

Everton want all the money

Faced with the prospect of relegation after being deducted two points by the Premier League for breaching their financial code of conduct, Everton are demanding a fee of €60/70 million for Onana, as per Florian Plettenberg.

The 22-year-old holds an important starting spot in the team under Sean Dyche, with 24 appearances under his belt in the Premier League with two goals.

However, currently just two points above the relegation zone with seven matches left in the Premier League season, the prospect of going down is very real for Everton.

Should this nightmare become a reality for the Toffees, they will have to slash their asking price for Onana considerably. In that event, €30-40 million should be enough to lure him away from the Championship.

Either way, Barcelona will have to compete with Bayern Munich for Onana’s signature. They, too, are looking for a defensive midfielder in the summer, and are financially healthier than the Catalans.

What are Barcelona’s other options?

Realistically, Barcelona will have to do a lot of work in the transfer market before they even start dreaming about signing new players.

If they do reach financial stability, though, Joshua Kimmich seems to be a player the entire Barcelona board is a fan of.

Barça Universal was also informed that Jorginho is an option that the club likes, especially due to his stylistical similarities to Busquets and also because he will be available on a free transfer once the season ends.

Nice’s Khephren Thuram is another option on the table according to recent rumours, but has not gained much strength as of now.
