Barcelona will not become the ‘new Ajax’ assures La Liga president Javier Tebas

FC Barcelona’s fickle financial state has become the talk of the town by now. Reckless spending over the years and poor foresight have culminated in a sticky situation on the monetary side.

These financial limitations have especially led them to become shorthanded in the transfer market, which the club aims to address.

The president of La Liga, Javier Tebas, has never shied away from giving his two cents on Barcelona’s situation and voicing his thoughts on their finances.

Optimistic outlook

Despite subtly throwing jibes at Barcelona in the past, he affirmed via MARCA that the Blaugranes have the means to claw their way out of any pitfalls they encounter.

When asked if Barcelona could become the ‘new Ajax’ by constantly selling players, Tebas dispelled those doubts, claiming:

“It’s just that it’s not going to happen. Barcelona will get out of the situation it is in. The club has options to take when its leaders decide to take them if they are the ones they believe will provide solutions.

The La Liga president added that selling their top players would prove to be enough to solve their financial situation and reintegrate stability.

“They have two or three top players that they can sell. They sell them, and with that, they solve a big part of the program.

With that, they can generate income that does not generate interest on debt, and with that, they can pay players,” he stated.

Further claiming that the team is far from being in a catastrophic situation in the sporting aspect, he said: “Despite the financial situation, Barcelona is still in the Champions League, and they still have a chance to win La Liga. They are not in a catastrophe.”

Opposition to the Super League

Vehemently opposing the formation of the Super League, supported by Barcelona and Real Madrid, and taking on the responsibility of overcoming the challenge at hand, Tebas exclaimed:

“I think it will be my last term as President of La Liga, although I condition it on the challenges. The challenges of the Super League, new competitions.

“We have to overcome this. European football is in danger. If we can solve these challenges, it will be my last term, and in four years I will leave.”

“They ask me why I am the only one in Europe talking about how football is in danger and we have to combat the Super League and these challenges.

“I don’t know. Ask the others who don’t speak in public. But believe me, in the private meetings, the majority are with me. If someone else joins me in speaking publicly, we will advance further,” he added.
