Barcelona wonderkid issues heartfelt apology after missing clear chances against Athletic Club

Barcelona were eliminated from the Copa del Rey round of 16 following their 2-4 defeat against Athletic Club and while the defeat was hard to take, a certain Lamine Yamal expressed his sorrow on social media, saying that he will continue to work hard for the team.

“We left everything and it didn’t happen,” he wrote as quoted by Mundo Deportivo, apologising to the fans. “Sorry culers for the mistakes. I will continue to work. I don’t know any other way.”

Yamal was simply the best Barcelona player

Yamal played a key role in Barcelona’s outing against Athletic Club. Although the defeat was hard to swallow, the 16-year-old’s performance gave much to think about for everyone related to the team.

Despite his young age, he showed amazing skills, and created great opportunities but also missed a couple of clear chances in the second half which could have won it for Barcelona.

Despite these misses, Yamal was arguably the best attacker for Barça in that match. He stood out in a previous game against Real Betis in La Liga and had a brilliant performance against Athletic Club in the Cup.

Playing for a team like Barcelona comes with its fair share of disadvantages and the fact that Yamal missed two one-on-one chances will continue to haunt him. One was a shot that went too high, and the other was a good lofted effort that unfortunately missed the target.

One of his attempts came a few minutes after the hour’s mark and the second was in the dying minutes of the match. A goal at that moment would have given Barcelona the ticket to the semi-final, but it just wasn’t meant to be.

In any way, it was quite positive to see 16-year-old Yamal getting a good run in the first team and the winger partially delivered what was promised. The raw talent still needs to be polished, but it is only about time.
