Barcelona’s buyback clause for La Liga defender is set for 2025 and not 2024 – report

Barcelona loanee defender Chadi Riad is having a fantastic season at Real Betis, with the 20-year-old clocking more than 1000 minutes across 13 La Liga outings. 

Interestingly enough, it is to be noted that when Barcelona sent Riad on loan to Betis, they inserted a purchase option for the Verdiblancos, although, in the official statement, the specific amount was never mentioned.

However, several sources are claiming that Betis would be able to buy him in the summer of 2024 for an amount in the region of just €3.5 million, which they plan on activating soon.

Furthermore, apart from the purchase option, Barcelona also included a buyback clause for double the money.

The clause is not that straightforward

Over the past few weeks, reports have emerged that Barcelona are contemplating this idea for the summer of 2024, but Fernando Polo of Mundo Deportivo has mentioned that their buyback option on Riad is valid from 2025 and not from 2024.

A few weeks back, we reported that Riad’s representatives denied the news of Barcelona’s willingness to bring him back to Catalonia.

Even though the scouting team was keeping an eye on him, the player’s agent talked to Barcelona and was told that they hadn’t made any decision yet.

All this means if they want to bring him back this year, they will have to get into negotiation with Betis.

Barcelona would need more money to bring him back

At Barcelona, it is known that they can’t bring back Riad in the summer of 2024 as the option to buy him back is set for 2025.

So, if Betis buys him this upcoming summer, the Blaugrana can only get him back by making a deal with Betis. 

They will have to do it by paying money or with special rights, like Ez Abde, whom Barcelona previously sold to Betis for €7.5 million and have a right to repurchase Abde and get 50% of any future sale of the player. 

In simple terms, Barcelona can’t just bring Riad back on their own next summer. It depends on Betis and negotiations. If Manuel Pellegrini’s side doesn’t buy him, he could return in 2024 when the loan ends.

But if Real Betis sign him, which they intend to, Barcelona will only be able to acquire him using the buyback clause in 2025.
