Bayern Munich having doubts about summer swoop for Barcelona heavyweight

Over the past few weeks, the future of Barcelona ace Frenkie de Jong has once again been dragged into question, owing to the club’s financial situation and the midfielder’s wages.

Indeed, it has been suggested that Barça could listen to offers for the Netherlands international if he does not sign a new deal with lower wages.

Bayern Munich, for one, have been touted as an interested party in securing the 26-year-old’s services ahead of a possible summer overhaul.

Bayern no longer sure about De Jong move

However, now BILD (h/t AS) reports that Bayern Munich are now having doubts about making a move to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona in the summer.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl and his team are preparing for a summer reshuffle after it was confirmed that Thomas Tuchel will not remain in charge.

However, De Jong, one of the long-standing targets for the Bavarians, is not to the liking of the club’s entire technical secretariat.

According to the report, De Jong’s name was discussed internally at Bayern Munich, but the Dutchman is not seen as a favoured candidate to join the club.

It is because Die Roten are looking for a proper defensive midfielder and believe that the Dutchman is not a real No. 6. He is more comfortable as an inside midfielder, but Bayern do not need reinforcements there.

What next for De Jong?

De Jong, currently out with an injury, will not be playing again for Barcelona this season and is expected to return in time for the UEFA Euro 2024 in the summer.

De Jong has a contract with Barcelona until 2026. The Catalan side would be willing to let the midfielder leave in the summer if they receive an attractive transfer fee of between €70-80 million.

But with Bayern no longer convinced about a move for the Dutchman, it remains to be seen if there are any takers for him.
