But transfer expert Fabrizio Romano tweeted the news that the 33-year-old will leave as a free agent at the end of the term.

He said: “Understand Marcos Alonso will leave Barcelona as a free agent at the end of the current season.

“Massive respect between club and player but he’s leaving in June, decision made.

“Sergi Roberto could also leave for free but the final decision will also depend on Xavi’s future.”

Alonso arrived at the La Liga giants on September 2 and made his debut just eight days later in the 4-0 win at Cadiz in the league.

And in his debut season, he won the league title under boss Xavi.

The ex-Bolton star has made 44 appearances and scored three goals during his 18 months at Barca.

But the defender has had it tough this season missing a chunk of games due to a back injury.

And now his time has been cut short as he will leave Barca as a free agent.

Prior to his move to Barca the Spain international signed for Chelsea in 2016 in a deal worth £24m from Fiorentina.
