Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood endures nightmare Barcelona ‘audition’

Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood endured a difficult evening against potential suitors Barcelona on Saturday.

Getafe lost 4-0 to Barca, a result that leaves them 10th in La Liga. The United loanee has done well since joining Getafe on loan, scoring seven goals and grabbing five assists in 24 games before Saturday’s match.

Last month it was reported that Barcelona were leading the race to sign Greenwood, with Atletico Madrid also said to be interested. Sir Jim Ratcliffe said last week that he was yet to make a decision on Greenwood’s United future, even though the club decided last summer that it would be best for the youngster to continue his career away from Old Trafford.

With Saturday’s match against Barcelona potentially an audition for Greenwood, he had a game to forget, with all three of his efforts failing to trouble Marc Andre ter Stegen.

Getafe manager Jose Bordalas made some second-half changes to try and change the game, taking off Greenwood after 67 minutes. Greenwood didn’t make the impact he wanted, making two key passes but only completing 20 with an 80% success rate. It was Getafe’s first loss in four games.

When asked about Greenwood’s future at United, Ratcliffe said: “We will make a decision, correct. All I can do is talk about the principle of how we will approach decisions like that. Is he the right type of footballer, are we happy with if is he a good person or not?”
