Mason Greenwood not expecting Manchester United stay amid Barcelona links

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood is reportedly “not expecting to return to Old Trafford at the end of the campaign,” as the Red Devils hunt a permanent sale amid Barcelona interest.

According to GIVEMESPORT, there is no way back for Barcelona target Greenwood at Manchester United, who are looking to offload him, with a permanent move to La Liga the most likely option. The Red Devils want £34 million to sell him.

The 22-year-old is currently on loan from Manchester United at Getafe after the Red Devils concluded it would be best for him to continue his career away from Old Trafford after an internal investigation into the allegations made against the player.

To that end, he is enjoying an impressive season at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, where he has chipped in with eight goals and five assists in all competitions this season. Manchester United’s new minority owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who has taken charge of football operations at the club, seemed to have left the door open for a Greenwood return in a controversial interview with the Athletic back in February.

Despite the claims from the petrochemical billionaire, it seems official that Manchester United have already decided that the best course of action would be the permanent sale of Mason Greenwood.

Barcelona keen on £34 million-rated Mason Greenwood

As such, Manchester United’s best hope of banking a significant fee for Greenwood is to find a club in La Liga. Getafe are doing everything they can to make sure they retain him through a subsequent loan, which Manchester United may take into consideration if the permanent bids fall short of their £34 million valuation.

With the Englishman continuing to perform at a high level for Getafe, the Red Devils hope to expand his market appeal. Rumour mill says that multiple Spanish top-flight sides are monitoring Greenwood’s situation, and Manchester United are said to have slapped a £34 million on his head.

Barcelona are rumoured to be one of the sides keen on a cut-price deal for Greenwood, and could provide the player with a way to continue plying his trade on the continent rather than return to England. Either way, the Manchester United prospect is not expecting to remain at Old Trafford beyond the summer transfer window.

It will be interesting to see if Barcelona make a move for Greenwood in the summer given their finances are in all sorts of doldrums. But a potential move may also somewhat tarnish their reputation as a leading football entity in the world.
