Previous meetings of all colours against Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey


The two Copa del Rey kings, Athletic Club de Bilbao and FC Barcelona, meet on Wednesday in San Mamés, kick off 9.30pm CET, in the quarter finals of this season’s competition. The two clubs have won the Copa on 54 occasions between, Barça leading the way with 31 wins and the Basque club not far behind on 23 victories. 

Blaugrana dominance over last decade…

The two clubs have met on eight occasions since 2014 in the competition. In 2015 Barça and Athletic faced each other in the final played at Spotify Camp Nou with Luis Enrique’s team winning 3-1. The teams met again in the final in 2021 with Ronald Koeman’s Barça running out 4-0 winners in the Estadio de la Cartuja in Seville, with the blaugranes  having the edge in recent contest with five wins and three defeats. 

 

All time 

The clubs met for the first time in the competition in 1920 in El Molinón stadium in Gijón. Barça took their first win in the competition – then called the Copa Alfons XIII – with a 2-0 win over Athletic Club. Overall, in 44 matches in the Copa, Barça have a record of 24 wins, six draws and 14 defeats. 

Just one defeat in the quarter-finals 

Wednesday’s game will be the sixth between the clubs at this stage of the competition. History is in Barça’s favour as they have progressed in four of the six ties, scoring 19 goals and conceding 11. 

Messi, top scorer

The Argentine scored eight goals in 10 matches in the Copa del Rey against Athletic Club. The most famous strike came in the 2015 final at Spotify Camp Nou when he took on most of the Athletic side by himself, a goal that won the Puskas Award for the 2014/15 season.
