Robert Lewandowski talks Barcelona’s title hopes, Xavi, Hansi Flick, Busquets, Alba: “Good person”
It has not been an easy season for Robert Lewandowski so far. Coming into the new campaign as the defending Pichichi winner, the Polish striker was seen as one capable of making a difference on the field for the Catalans once more.
His form in front of goal this season has been questionable. 22 games into the league calendar, Lewandowski has scored just ten goals and it is only in recent weeks that he has seen an improvement in form.
He now has three goals and an assist in his last four appearances for Barcelona and appears on his way back to his goalscoring form. Yet, it will require a monumental improvement from him if Barcelona are to improve their chances this season and push for a title.
Speaking to the media during the closing ceremony of the 18th edition of the Relats Solidaris de l’Esport, a book written by sports journalists for charity, the Polish striker touched on the team’s performance this season and sparked hope in fans that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
“We are at the ideal time to change, to play better. First in Vigo and then the Champions League arrives. We are working on it,” he said via SPORT, looking forward to the games coming up later this month.
Commenting on Barcelona’s recent draw against Granada, Lewandowski explained his perspective on the same but insisted that it was not too late to wake up and turn around the tide.
“It’s hard to explain what happens, because we scored three goals against Granada, for example. We have had a long week to work and, as I said, we are at the perfect time to change.”
The veteran striker then went a step further and spoke on his optimism over winning a title with the club this season, an objective that appears practically very difficult at this point.
“Tranquility and confidence. I’m sure we’re going to win a lot of games and at the end of the season we’re going to win something.”
Barcelona’s downfall this season has been overtly observable and appalling, for they won the league last season with a very similar squad. Speaking on the differences between the current team and that of last season, the Pole said,
“Last year there were Busquets, Jordi Alba and Piqué. This year there is a mixture of experience and youth and that shows.”
He was subsequently asked to comment on the refereeing in La Liga this season, a topic that has remained contentious for weeks now after repeated pieces of evidence of VAR misuse.
“I focus on scoring goals, when I talk to them it’s to understand their decisions. When the field points out one thing and the VAR points out another,” he said, preferring not to comment on the same.
Finally, he was quizzed on the possible appointment of his former manager, Hansi Flick, as the coach of FC Barcelona once Xavi leaves the club this summer.
“Barça’s coach is Xavi. Flick? He’s a good person,” he concluded.
