Two players lead Barcelona’s transfer wishlist for crucial summer overhaul

Barcelona’s recent defeat to Girona in the Catalan derby is sure to have widespread consequences in regard to the club’s team building this summer.

If there was ever a doubt in the minds of the Barcelona board over the future of certain stars, those doubts would have been reinforced following the poor performance in the Catalan derby.

Barcelona’s transfer priority this summer

A recent report from Diario SPORT has pointed out Barcelona’s absolute priority in the upcoming summer transfer window.

It appears the Catalans are determined to sign a new defensive midfielder. The club have noticed a certain lack of stability in midfield this season, especially following the departure of Sergio Busquets.

Barcelona are looking to bring back that stability by signing a new number six, who can accompany the likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Pedri and Gavi in the middle of the park.

This comes on the back of reports suggesting Barcelona have put Frenkie de Jong on the market, which is quite a significant development in the context of the club’s revolution.

Two targets in mind

It seems Barcelona are ready to splurge on a new defensive midfielder. The potential exit of de Jong, to that end, could go a long way in freeing up the space required to go after a new face.

The report adds that Barça have two targets in mind – Joshua Kimmich and Martin Zubimendi, in their bid to address the defensive midfield problem.

Neither of these two players, though, will be easy to get. Kimmich does face a tense situation at Bayern, but the likely appointment of Ralf Rangnick could change his mind.

Zubimendi, on the other hand, is expected to cost a fortune and Barcelona will not be in a position to afford the Spaniard without getting rid of multiple first-team stars.
