Two reasons why Roberto can start over Fermin for Barcelona vs Real Madrid – report

Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez is expected to face a major selection dilemma as his team takes on Real Madrid in the final of the Spanish Super Cup this evening.

Barça have been boosted by the return of Pedri heading into this contest, which is only going to make things more difficult for Xavi, as far as the team selection is concerned.

While Pedri’s return is expected to significantly alter Xavi’s plans, it appears the Barcelona coach make another eye-catching change against Real Madrid.

Roberto to start ahead of Fermin?

According to Mundo Deportivo, Xavi could introduce a rather surprising change in the attacking slots.

It was believed that Fermin Lopez was a guaranteed starter on the right flank, partnering Robert Lewandowski and Lamine Yamal in the final third.

But as per the report, Xavi could potentially start Sergi Roberto ahead of Fermin, though not necessarily in the attacking roles.

Two reasons why Robert could preferred

The report points out that Roberto could play ahead of Fermin in midfield because of his immense experience at the highest level of football.

Given Barcelona’s recent struggles with form and injury, Roberto’s presence could indeed prove to be critical, in the middle of the park.

Another reason why the veteran Spaniard could be preferred tonight is his versatility. Roberto is indeed capable of operating in both left and right flanks, making him a viable option for Xavi in the second line of press.

Not to mention, Roberto has emerged as one of Barcelona’s best performers since the turn of the year and his good form could aid the Catalans as they look to secure the first trophy of the season.
