Transfer Rumors and News

Barcelona defender expected to leave the club this summer after ‘disappointing season’

Barcelona do not seem to have clear-cut plans for their summer transfer window goals, but one thing is for certain, they definitely need to offload some of the players already in their squad in an attempt to raise money through player sales.

While there are some big names expected to leave the club, including perhaps Raphinha, Andreas Christensen, and Jules Kounde, all of whom are on the radar of Premier Leagues, Barcelona will also need to get rid of some of the other deadwood in their team.

This includes players who have not particularly made enough of a difference to the side since joining, and others who are on loan, or have expiring contracts.

Perhaps on the top of this list is Marcos Alonso, who joined from Chelsea in 2022. The left-back played a fair few minutes – mostly as a centre-back – last season, but has completely fallen out of favour this season due to a number of reasons.

Alonso on his way out?

As such, rumours about Alonso’s exit have flooded Spanish news in recent weeks, with Javi Miguel recently claiming that his future is definitely out of the club.

Alonso has been injured for most of the season, dealing with a back problem, and has only played 299 minutes in seven games this season, which is the least of any player in the team, including backup goalkeeper Inaki Pena.

Alonso returned from injury against Atletico Madrid this weekend, and despite Joao Cancelo being out of the squad, he did not start the game, with Xavi opting for Hector Fort as the left-back.

The La Masia defender picked up an injury late in the game, and had to be substituted off, but even then Xavi opted to bring in Inigo Martinez instead of the former Chelsea man.

Full-back options for the future

With Alonso set to leave, Barcelona will have only Alejandro Balde as the natural senior left-back in the team. However, they do plan to make a permanent move for Joao Cancelo, who is currently on loan from Manchester City.

Apart from that, the return of Julian Araujo from Las Palmas is also considered, who is currently on loan at Las Palmas.

Between those two, Hector Fort, and Balde in the squad, Barcelona should be more than covered for both full-back positions.
