Indeed, according to AS, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) considers 17-year-old Pau Cubarsi to be the future of the national’s team defence.
Barcelona players have been accustomed to leading the front lines for the Spanish national team, with the golden generation of La Roja previously comprising an abundance of La Masia graduates.
With Barcelona once again producing youngsters with high ceilings in quick succession, Spain are looking to recreate that dynamic, with Pau Cubarsi believed to be the perfect candidate to lead the back line in the future.
The youngster is still growing, but some describe him as “the perfect mix of Carles Puyol and Gerard Piqué.”
This is because he combines an aggressive style of play with incredible composure in build-ups, which helped him, for instance, record a 93.5% passing success rate during the match against Betis.
Cubarsi’s coaches also highlight his exceptional tactical reading of the game, emphasizing his ability to absorb information well and has caught the attention of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola as well.
As he grows in maturity and experience, Spain will keep close tabs on the player. And while a spot for the Euros this summer appear distant, he might make it to the Olympics squad.
