Barcelona eyeing free transfer swoop for Bayern Munich forward this summer
Bayern Munich striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting has always been a squad player, be it for the German champions or Paris Saint-Germain where he played two seasons between 2018 and 2020.
However, his influence off the bench is absolutely unquestionable and this can be understood by the fact that he scored 17 goals for the Bavarians during the 2022/23 season.
Now, at 34 years of age, one might think that there’s not much left in his tank, but Barcelona think otherwise.
In fact, if a report from SPORT is to be believed, the Cameroonian is currently being considered by the management because he is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.
What’s the story?
It is no secret that Barcelona are going through tough financial times and they can not afford big player transfers. This is why they are looking at experienced players who will be free agents next summer and one of them is Choupo-Moting.
Choupo-Moting’s contract with Bayern ends in June, and there is talk that Barcelona are interested in signing him.
However, other clubs from the English Premier League, Italian Serie A, and Saudi Pro League are also keeping an eye on him.
A fading effect
It is to be noted that Choupo-Moting had a good run with Bayern when he got the chance to play when Robert Lewandowski moved to Barcelona.
But after losing his spot and facing a knee injury, he has not been as prominent as before. The coach who trusted him, Julian Nagelsmann, was replaced by Thomas Tuchel, and the former Chelsea manager favours another striker, Harry Kane, who joined Bayern last summer.
Now, Kane, with a contract until 2027, has pushed Choupo-Moting to the sidelines and with limited playing time, Choupo-Moting is looking for a change.
This is exactly where Barcelona are looking to place their bet, but it must be noted that even if he arrives, he will not have a prominent role due to the presence of Lewandowski and Vitor Roque.
