Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta talks Xavi, Lamine, Cubarsi, Pedri, de Jong
Within FC Barcelona’s illustrious list of legends, various academy graduates grace its history, with few shining brighter than the enduring figure of Andres Iniesta.
The midfield maestro helped Barcelona achieve innumerable accolades, including multiple La Liga titles, UEFA Champions League trophies, and Copa del Rey victories.
Now, talking to La Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Mundo Deportivo) Iniesta touched upon matters related to his former club, where he earned a legendary status.
Expressing solidarity with his former partner in crime, Xavi Hernandez, who will be stepping down as Barcelona’s manager at the end of the season, Iniesta highlighted Xavi’s selfless commitment to the club.
“I suffer with him. As a fan and as a friend. Because I know how much he cared about coaching Barça and how much he cares about this club. He put incredible passion into it and no one wants things to go better for him than he does.
“And he’s not doing it for himself or his personal glory, but because he loves the club. It is clear that if he has decided to resign it is only for the good of Barça,” he remarked.
When asked about the rise of young players Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi, Iniesta acknowledged their exceptional talents but made it clear that they must not be burdened with pressure at such tender ages.
“On the one hand, it’s exceptional that such young guys make it to the first team and play so well.
“On the other hand, I think these things are always the result of a specific context. The bad thing: I don’t think that such young players should be pulling such a demanding cart as Barça’s,” the 39-year-old exclaimed.
Voicing his thoughts on the grand showdown between Barcelona and Napoli, which is just a few hours away, Iniesta stated: “It is a complicated, open challenge, and it is difficult to pinpoint a favorite.”
Admitting the limitations Barcelona faces after losing both Pedri and Frenkie de Jong, Iniesta claimed the encounter will by no means be a walk in the park for the Catalan giants.
“In the first leg, Barça did well but did not win, and Napoli have improved in these three weeks, they have had more positive feelings linked to the change of coach, while Xavi lost two important players such as Pedri and De Jong. I have faith in Barça, but it won’t be easy,” he mentioned.
