Barcelona prepare a three-man shortlist of managers to replace Xavi, Luis Enrique in contention – Romero

Barcelona are still immersed in the search for a new manager, who can replace Xavi Hernandez in the coming summer.

The Catalans have had no shortage of options, ranging from Hansi Flick to Jurgen Klopp. But in a recent update, Gerard Romero confirms that Barça have identified three key candidates and it won’t be surprising to see one of them become the Barcelona coach next season.

The three managers in question are Hansi Flick, Roberto De Zerbi and Luis Enrique. Barcelona have wide-ranging views on each of them as well.

Hansi Flick: The realistic option

Romero adds that Hansi Flick is the most well-positioned candidate to become the new Barcelona coach next season.

The German is currently a free agent and has a proven track record of winning titles. He notably won the treble with Bayern Munich in 2020. He also has an excellent relationship with Barcelona stars Robert Lewandowski and Ilkay Gundogan.

However, Romero notes that negotiations with Flick are not ‘as closed’ as it seems, and it might take a bit of time before the two parties can close an agreement.

Luis Enrique: The fan-favourite

While Flick might lead the race to become the next Barcelona coach, the club’s internal team appears to have a favourite in the form of Luis Enrique.

According to Romero, there are some within the Barcelona board, who are willing to wait a little just so that the club can better options in the market. They particularly want Enrique to be one of the options.

Unfortunately for Barcelona, the Spaniard will not be available in the coming summer, having only joined PSG last summer.

Roberto De Zerbi: The wild card

Roberto De Zerbi is indeed a wild card option for FC Barcelona. Among the non-German options, he was tagged as one of the most realistic targets for the Catalans.

De Zerbi is rated highly in the Barcelona camp as well, particularly due to his tactical nous and the ability to nurture talent.

At the same time, some in Barcelona’s ranks doubt the Italian as well, mainly due to his lack of experience in managing a top club.
