Barcelona president Joan Laporta reveals plans to return to USA for pre-season summer tour
As is becoming usual, the United States is set to host a series of friendlies involving Europe’s top teams. It was announced that Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool will travel to the US to prepare for the 2024-25 pre-season. Now, Joan Laporta, president of Barcelona, hinted that the Spanish club will once again return to American soil for their preparations.
“In the summer tour that we will do, if we go to the United States in the end, we will also take Cupra. We can help a lot because, for us, the American market is also important and Americans love European cars. Surely it will be successful,” Joan Laporta stated during the extension of the agreement with car manufacturer Cupra, which runs until 2029.
Barcelona’s most recent trip to the States was when the club played a friendly match against the recent Mexican champions, Club América. This match took place on December 21, 2023 at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, Texas. and was won by the Mexicans, despite Barça playing with players such as Lewandowski, Frenkie de Jong and João Cancelo.
From that match alone, Barcelona took home a total of $5.49 million for facing the champions of Mexican football, meaning the game, while a slight inconvenience in the Barça calendar, was always going to be a win-win for both the club and the culés who live in the United States, of which there are thousands.
“I see a splendid, brilliant Barça that makes many people happy,” Laporta concluded in front the media, predicting the best for his team, who currently find themselves 3rd in LaLiga EA Sports with 57 points, two behind Girona and eight behind Real Madrid, with 12 games to go in the fascinating 23-24 season.
