Barcelona will re-sign La Masia defender for €7 million only to sell him for a profit

In a major update, SPORT’s Tomas Andreu has reported that Barcelona will bring back La Masia graduate Chadi Riad from Real Betis in the summer.

But the idea would be to not keep the centre-back at the club and instead sell him for a bigger profit, following his development in Seville this season.

Barcelona will execute buyback clause

Barcelona allowed Chadi Riad to join Real Betis last summer, with the defender securing a loan move with a permanent purchase clause worth €3 million, which Manuel Pellegrini’s side will be activating.

At the same time, the Blaugrana included a buyback clause for the Moroccan defender which would allow them to re-sign him for a fee of €7 million.

There have been conflicting reports regarding the validity of the clause, with some suggesting that it will be active from 2025 while few other outlets suggest it can be triggered this year itself.

SPORT states that the €7 million repurchase option will be valid this summer and next summer and Barcelona plan on activating it now.

Given that they would receive €3 million from Real Betis for his sale, the total cost of the operation to bring him back would be €4 million.

Barcelona believe they can sell Riad for €15 million

Since joining Betis from Barcelona, Riad has become a regular for Manuel Pellegrini’s side and has grown as a player.

It has been reflected in his market value which has risen from €500,000 to €6 million. As such, Barcelona believe that they could make a big profit from his sale even if they spend €4 million on bringing him back.

As such, the Blaugrana are confident that they can sell him for at least €15 million in the summer and even keep a future sale clause, which would ensure further profits down the line.

The sporting department is pleased with Riad’s performance at Betis, but there is simply no place for him in the first-team roster at this point given the number of central defenders at the club.

With interest in him rising, re-signing him and reselling him for a bigger fee would be a smart move, especially with Barcelona in need of financial boost.
