Former Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso will leave Barcelona as a free agent at the end of the season, according to reports.

The 33-year-old has struggled for game time this term amid a back injury which kept him on the sidelines for three months.

Alonso made 37 appearances in his debut campaign for Barca, following a switch from Stamford Bridge in 2022, as they claimed the LaLiga title.

But with manager Xavi set to depart this summer, there is expected to be some turnover of the squad at the end of the campaign.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Alonso will depart the Camp Nou after two years with the club. He also reports that the future of club stalwart Sergi Roberto remains in the balance.

But with the Italian’s departure in 2018, Alonso fell out of favour with subsequent Chelsea managers. Despite featuring in 31 league games under Maurizio Sarri during the 2018-19 season, he was benched for the final rounds of their Europa League triumph.

Alonso continued to see his playing time diminish under Thomas Tuchel, when the Blues lifted the Champions League in 2021.
