Haaland acknowledges Messi is the ‘best that has ever played’, issues update on future

Manchester City forward Erling Haaland has said that Lionel Messi is the best player who has ever played football, adding for someone to be known as the best, the former Barcelona captain might have to retire.

Haaland, a supposed target for Barcelona and Real Madrid, was speaking ahead of Manchester City’s second leg tie against Copenhagen in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, and the Norwegian reflected on his career amidst his exit links.

Before dwelling on the rumours, the young forward proudly added that at just 23 years of age, he has won all the trophies, but he wants to win it all again.

“I’ve won it all but I’m only 23, so I want to win it all again,” he was quoted by Ian Cheeseman.

“Messi is the best that has ever played, maybe he has to retire for someone else to be regarded as the best,” he added.

Haaland’s take on his future

It is to be noted that Haaland’s current contract with Manchester City is set to conclude in June 2027, and there have been previous rumours connecting the 23-year-old with a transfer to both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

In fact, Haaland’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, held a meeting with Barça director Deco a few days ago, fueling the transfer speculations.

Despite expressing delight with his current role at City, the forward did not rule out the possibility of exploring other opportunities in the future.

“I’m really happy, especially with the people I’m surrounded by. The manager, the directors, the board, I am really happy I have to say.

“I say this now, it will probably be a massive headline, tomorrow you never know what the future brings but I am happy. You can write this but you also have to write everything I said before. I am happy,” he added.
