Marc-Andre ter Stegen at a loss to explain Barcelona’s defeat to Girona

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen was at a loss to explain his team’s defeat to Girona on Saturday in La Liga.

The hosts came from 2-1 down to win 4-2 and move above Xavi’s side in the table ahead of the last four games of the season.

“It’s difficult to find an explanation. We had the game quite under control until a certain moment, but they scored the goal and everything moved. We couldn’t find any solution to stop them and they overtook us in a few minutes,” he told reporters.

“There’s nothing wrong with conceding a goal, Girona is in a sweet moment and they’ve had a great season. It can happen that they take the lead or they equalise, but it can’t happen to us that in a short time. We lose time, we lose structure… It is very difficult to find explanations for these things.”

Ter Stegen also spoke about what he feels Barcelona must do to try and prevent a repeat in the future.

“We have to be honest with ourselves to know why these things happen to us. We need to do this exercise for the future and to compete for second place, although. We don’t depend on ourselves,” he added.

“We have to look for solutions and prepare ourselves mentally for this type of situation. It can happen to us that they equalise, that they go ahead, but you can’t break everything into pieces.

“If that happens, we have to defend forward again, do even more basic work. It can’t happen to us that they create so many chances. We have a few days to get back to being good and learn from our mistakes because they can’t happen twice.”

Barca have been leaking goals in recent weeks and have over a week to try and get back on track. They return to action on Monday, 13th May at home to Real Sociedad.
