PSG vs Barcelona predictions

For these two clubs, the Champions League is everything this season.

Paris Saint-Germain are not reliant on Europe’s premier competition for silverware. Ten points clear at the summit of the Ligue 1 standings, it is a matter of when not if they win the title. PSG are also through to the final of the Coupe de France, where they will face Lyon.

Yet it is the Champions League that they really crave. Ever since being bought by Qatar Sports Investments in 2011, PSG have been on a mission to be crowned kings of the continent for the first time in their history.

After a few near-misses and several ignominious exits over the last decade or so, the club from the French capital hope that this is finally their year.

Barcelona, for their part, need the Champions League to salvage their season. Despite an improvement in form over the last couple of months, Xavi Hernandez’s side are eight points adrift of Real Madrid in La Liga. The title will almost certainly elude them.

Barcelona lost to eventual winners Athletic Bilbao in the quarter-finals of the Athletic Club, so a failure to triumph in Europe would leave them empty-handed this term.

The stakes are high, then. Barcelona beat Napoli 4-2 on aggregate in the round of 16, but this will be a tougher test. The same is true for PSG, who eased past Real Sociedad 4-1 over two legs last time out.

Of course, these two teams met in the 2016/17 edition of this competition. PSG won the first leg 4-0 at the Parc des Princes, before collapsing in an astonishing 6-1 defeat in the return fixture at the Camp Nou.

We could be in store for a more low-key affair this time around, at least in the first leg. Will it be advantage PSG or advantage Barcelona after Wednesday evening?

PSG vs Barcelona betting tips

Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona will both be looking to establish a first-leg lead in this quarter-final tie.

Barcelona or draw – 10/11 (BetMGM)

Luis Enrique will be facing his former club on Wednesday. The ex-Barcelona manager won the Champions League with the Blaugrana in 2014/15 and he is now looking to go all the way with PSG.

Some tipped the French champions to struggle against Real Sociedad in the last 16, but PSG were pretty comfortable for the most part. But Barcelona have what it takes to make life more difficult for them.

PSG warmed up for the first leg with a disappointing 1-1 draw with last-placed Clermont at the Parc des Princes.

Kylian Mbappe has often been left out of the side in Ligue 1 ahead of his departure this summer. While he is guaranteed to start this match, the whole situation is far from ideal.

Barcelona can take advantage. They have not lost any of the 11 matches they have contested since Xavi announced he will leave the club at the end of the season back in January.

The Catalan outfit are difficult to beat again and we like their chances of avoiding defeat against PSG.

Under 2.5 goals – 6/5 (BetMGM)

There will be no shortage of attacking quality on display in Paris on Wednesday.

PSG’s frontline will likely feature Goncalo Ramos and Ousmane Dembele alongside the star of the show, Mbappe, who scored three times in the round of 16. However, flying full-back Achraf Hakimi is banned.

For Barcelona, the experienced Robert Lewandowski, who has scored more Champions League goals than anyone but Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, will be flanked by Raphinha and the precocious 16-year-old Lamine Yamal.

Yet we expect defences to come out on top here. Champions League first legs are often tight and cagey, with both teams fearful of making mistakes.

Last season, for instance, three out of four quarter-final first legs featured two goals or fewer. With that in mind, these odds represent fantastic value.

Robert Lewandowski to score any time – 33/20 (BetMGM)

Mbappe is the favourite in this market and it is hard to bet against the PSG forward. But take a look at the aforementioned Lewandowski, who has stepped up in this competition time and time again for Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

This has not been the greatest season of Lewandowski’s career, but most strikers on the planet would kill for his numbers.

The Poland international’s peak years might be behind him, yet he has still found the net 20 times in 40 outings in all competitions.

Lewandowski will have to be patient at the top of the pitch on Wednesday as PSG seek to dominate possession. But if a good chance comes his way, there is usually only one outcome.

At the price listed below, Lewandowski looks like the best choice here.
