‘Ungrateful’ – Barcelona defender aims dig at Manchester City over robbery last season

Barcelona have already expressed their desire to retain the contracts of Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix permanently, happy with both of their performances this season.

While the latter has had a mixed review from the Barcelona faithful, who are unhappy with his inconsistent showing, the former seems to have won over the home support with his constantly impressive displays as the fullback.

Cancelo moved to Barça under rather controversial context, though, with Manchester City seemingly not happy with his attitude.

There has been a lot of talk about his behaviour since then, but Cancelo continues to maintain his side of the story as a disciplined player.

“There were fake stories about me at City. I’ve never been a bad teammate,” he said, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

Calls out Manchester City

Cancelo went on to recall an incident from 2021 when he was robbed and assaulted at his own house on Christmas eve. He even suffered a cut just above his eyebrow during this.

“I remember once I was robbed and assaulted at home and the next day I was playing at Emirates against Arsenal.”

“These are things you don’t forget, I left my wife and daughter alone at home still scared, in shock, to play for City,” he added, suggesting irresponsible behaviour on City’s part.

Evidently unhappy with how his image has changed since his move from Manchester, Cancelo called Pep Guardiola’s side ‘ungrateful’.

“At City it was a bit ungrateful to talk about me like this, I’ve been an important player for them.”

Barcelona future

Cancelo has made it clear time and again that he wants to continue at Barcelona beyond this loan season. He is very happy at the club, and is hoping that the two clubs can find a solution.

Manchester City will reportedly ask for a sum upwards of €25 million for his services, which is more than reasonable for a player of his talent.

And Barcelona should not, ideally, have too much trouble shelling that amount, but have other priorities they need to tend to before signing a full-back, perhaps.

Either way, Joan Laporta has confirmed that the Catalans are interested in signing Cancelo and Felix both permanently, and will try to find a solution ahead of the summer transfer window.
