Barcelona board in dispute over Xavi’s continuity as coach – report

Despite announcing his desire to leave Barcelona at the end of the season, the future of Xavi Hernandez has remained a hot topic in Catalonia.

That is because Barcelona have staged a strong resurgence shortly after Xavi’s announcement and have notably reached the quarterfinal stage of the UEFA Champions League.

Barcelona have also done extremely well in La Liga and maintained pressure on Real Madrid at the top. As a result, many expect Xavi to reverse his decision and stay at Camp Nou this summer.

Friction in the Barcelona board over Xavi

However, in order to retain Xavi as the head coach, the club must make serious efforts to convince the Spaniard, who has publicly admitted his lack of appreciation within the camp.

But as things stand, there is friction growing within the Barcelona board over the future of Xavi Hernandez, with some supporting his prolonged stay while others are keen on finding a new coach.

That is according to Diario SPORT, which suggests that club president Joan Laporta and vice president Rafa Yuste are in favour of retaining the services of Xavi.

But on the flip side, other prominent members of the board want the Spaniard gone. They prefer Barcelona to go after a more experienced coach in the coming summer.

What’s next?

Xavi has remained tight-lipped about his future since the announcement. But the Barça coach is aware of the fact that the influential Laporta is one of his biggest supporters.

In the meantime, though, Xavi will focus on Barcelona’s objectives at hand this season, especially with the Catalans set to take on PSG in the UCL quarterfinals.

As the report suggests, a lot may happen between now and the end of the season. Hence, fans may have to wait before they receive a conclusive update on the future of the coach.

However, it must be noted that Xavi has no shortage of suitors and is already attracting interest from several Premier League clubs, including Chelsea.
