Barcelona could lose €10 million from defender’s injury – report

Barcelona suffered a massive blow last month when Sergino Dest, currently on loan at PSV Eindhoven, picked up a serious knee injury.

It appears the injury may well keep Dest sidelined throughout the remainder of the year, striking a massive blow to the player’s progress.

Dest, after all, was enjoying an excellent loan spell at PSV Eindhoven this season. Before his injury, the right-back was involved in nine goals in all competitions, notably becoming an ever-present figure in the PSV backline.

A big blow for Barcelona

Dest’s long-term injury will certainly stall the player’s development going forward. But for the more immediate future, the injury may also deal a heavy blow to Barcelona’s plans for the coming summer, potentially leaving them devoid of a crucial financial injection.

That is because Dest’s long-term injury may alter PSV Eindhoven’s plans to sign the player on a permanent deal this summer, reports Fabrizio Romano (h/t Fichajes).

PSV have the option of signing Dest permanently this summer for a fee of just €10 million. As reported earlier, the Dutch outfit was strongly considering the option, having been left impressed by the defender’s performances in Eredivisie.

However, according to Fabrizio, PSV are re-assessing Dest’s situation. They believe the defender’s long-term injury could affect their plans to sign him on a permanent deal this summer.

How it can impact Barcelona

Due to Dest’s injury, Barcelona now stand to miss out on a potential revenue of €10 million, which, in hindsight, could be significant for the club’s balance sheets.

As reported in the past, Barcelona are desperately looking at sales as their major source of income this summer. But with the club facing a precarious situation in regard to the likes of Clement Lenglet and Ansu Fati, Dest’s sale could indeed have been helpful.

Dest’s missed transfer, therefore, could put pressure on Barcelona to secure the sale of several first-team stars, including the likes of Raphinha and Frenkie de Jong.
