Barcelona will not sign Joao Felix permanently if loan extension fails  – Romero

As we approach the final phase of the campaign, Barcelona are facing immense pressure to reach a conclusion, as far as the future of Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix are concerned.

Both players are on loan at Barcelona until the end of the season. Although the club are keen on retaining the services of both the stars, they are yet to make any inroads so far.

The Catalans are exploring a permanent deal for Cancelo. As for Felix, the lines are blurred. The club are ready to extend Felix’s loan deal, but negotiating with Atletico Madrid could be tricky.

Barcelona unlikely to chase permanent deal for Felix

Barcelona-based journalist Gerard Romero, to that end, has issued an update on the future of Joao Felix.

Romero suggests that Barcelona are not too keen on chasing a permanent deal for the Portuguese international this summer.

That means if Barça fail in their attempts to extend Felix’s loan at Camp Nou, they are unlikely to explore the option of a permanent deal.

This is hardly surprising as Barcelona are not in a position to afford a permanent deal for Felix, who could cost well over €50 million mark. Most importantly, the player has not been consistent enough to earn a permanent move to Camp Nou.

Joao Felix’s inconsistencies this season

After starting the season on a good note, Felix has struggled to establish himself as an impact player at Barcelona.

The Portuguese international has scored only five goals in 20 league matches. Only two of those five goals have come since the turn of the year, with the attacker notably suffering from a brief injury spell.

In addition to his lack of productivity, Felix’s form has been quite mixed, which raises further questions over his usefulness to the squad.

Barcelona, therefore, could be making a prudent decision not to chase a permanent deal for the former Chelsea starlet. The Catalans, though, are certainly interesting in signing Cancelo on a permanent deal.

In fact, the future of these two Portuguese internationals is likely to be a topic of discussing during Joan Laporta’s recent meeting with superagent Jorge Mendes.
